Bam on the Money

Samantha Peters headed out in the Sponsors Charity Challenge set on having fun and enjoying the sport she loves . . . but is going home a winner.

She and Magnum Industries Zabambi triumphed in the very popular charity speed class where riders had the option of raising three fences for extra points in the opening round. However, they would be hit with extra penalties if it didn’t go their way. Dropped rails were turned into time, with the extra incentive of $500 for the fastest time – regardless of faults.

Seventeen sponsored riders started the class – the winning rider pocketing $1000 and the sponsor winning the equivalent to donate to their charity of choice.

Competition was fierce between riders, with many opting to raise the rails, but few leaving everything up and – more importantly – adding to their scores.

Six went clear and came through to the jump-off where they all started with clean slates but without the carrot of bonus fences.

Maddy Bult (Kumeu) and T&M Nurseries Ngahiwi Warrior were first out and fairly flew around, setting the pace, but unfortunately missing a fence.

Next out was Briar Burnett-Grant (Taupo) aboard Fiber Fresh Cormina Obolensky, who flew around, leaving everything in place and stopping the clock at 39.18 seconds.

Elmo Jackson (Auckland) and Saddlery Warehouse Next, who had already secured the first-round fastest time prize, were super-fast, but paid for it with two early rails. With the faults turned into time, they ended up on 42.55 seconds.

Peters was next and although they nearly missed at the second to last, they came home all clear in 38.83 seconds.

Keean Cooper (Te Kauwhata) aboard MaxLife Ngahiwi Best Wishes and Samantha Morrison (Tauranga) on Purepine Shavings Frangipanne de Toxandria added a rail each to their times, to draw with 40.94 seconds.

Peters was rapt. She has had Zabambi for five years and while they have jumped at World Cup level, she has opted to “regroup” a bit this season, saying the 11-year-old needed a “few more miles”.

“The idea today was to have fun and enjoy the sport,” said the full-time rider from Whangarei. “We did it!”

The combination took the shortest possible routes around the course. Fittingly, Peters is sponsored by Magnum Industries.

“I’ve been with them since the start of this season and just love their products – they are top quality products for our team.”

Peters is a big fan of the Continental Cars Audi World Cup Festival.

“This is a very good show,” she says.

She likes to use it to let her youngsters feel the atmosphere and buzz of a big busy show. Turns out, her horses liked it too, with all jumping exceptionally, with Cadillac NZPH also taking out the six-year-old style prize.

“It has been a really great weekend for us.”

Magnum Industries chose CatWalk as the charity to receive their winnings.
