Invaluable Opportunities for Youngsters

The team at Showjumping Waitemata love to find new ways of raising the bar in the national equestrian scene.

This time they introduced two training and education days in conjunction with the Continental Cars Audi World Cup Festival.

Group president Emma Buckingham says it has been a big success.

“It is particularly good for youngsters to train in the main arena,” she says. “Those taking part in the FEI Children’s International Classic had the chance to do a trot up and walk through all the things they would if they were competing at a top event. That’s not something many would have the opportunity to do until later in their careers.”

But it wasn’t just riders – judges course designers and budding officials also benefited. Part of the education came under the Equestrian Sports New Zealand judge’s mentoring programme giving them valuable training towards upgrading to national level.

FEI level 3 course designer Gerrit Beker was happy to share his vast knowledge and experience with course designers as part of both the ESNZ and FEI programmes.

“Having these training days was also a chance for others from all aspects of an event, to learn from some of the best – from administration right through. Even parents had a chance to learn more as part of their child’s equestrian journey.”
